Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian Islands. The island is bound with the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Its Greek name, Kerkyra or Korkyra, is related to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river.
The city of Corfu stands on the broad part of a peninsula with its Venetian citadel (Greek: Παλαιό Φρούριο). The old town, having grown within fortifications, is a labyrinth of narrow streets paved with cobblestones, sometimes tortuous but colourful and clean.
Korfu (griechisch Kérkyra (Κέρκυρα) ist die zweitgrößte der Ionischen Inseln und die siebtgrößte Griechenlands. Sie liegt südöstlich des italienischen „Stiefelabsatzes“ und nähert sich, getrennt durch die Straße von Korfu, im Norden bis auf zwei Kilometer der albanischen Küste. Wegen ihres für mediterrane Verhältnisse ausgeglichenen Klimas mit mediterranen, submediterranen und zentraleuropäischen Elementen wird Kerkyra auch „die grüne Insel“ genannt.
